Hoagie’s Corner

hoagiecorner.jpgJon B. posted the following as a comment, but this is definitely column worthy.
Was thinking about how bad Biron is on the shootout (the first shooter always scores thus putting that much more pressure on the flyers shooters) and i found this very damning statistical breakdown:
Biron is the much bigger issue than our shooters are.
25 goalies this year have faced 15 or more shootout attempts.
The average sv% for those 25 is 69.0%
Biron at 33% is the only goalie under 50%
18 of the 25 are 60% or better
7 of the 25 are 75% or better
The reason Edmonton wins all those games … not the shooters. The NHL’s 2 best goalies in the shooout:
#1. Mathieu Garon 2 goals in 32 chances for a 93.8%
#2. Dwayne Roloson 6 goals in 30 chances for a 80.0%

The entire list of 25
Name – Shots Against – Goals – Sv%
Mathieu Garon 32 2 93.8%
Dwayne Roloson 30 6 80.0%
Jose Theodore 24 5 79.2%
Carey Price 19 4 79.0%
Dany Sabourin 26 6 76.9%
Tomas Vokoun 38 9 76.3%
Johan Hedberg 28 7 75.0%
Henrik Lundqvist 19 5 73.7%
Martin Brodeur 26 7 73.1%
Ilja Bryzgalov 22 6 72.7%
Roberto Luongo 54 15 72.2%
Kari Lehtonen 18 5 72.2%
Rick Dipietro 21 6 71.4%
JS Giguere 25 8 68.0%
Olaf Kolzig 34 11 67.6%
Marty Turco 20 7 65.0%
Miikka Kiprusoff 17 6 64.7%
Vesa Toskala 15 6 60.0%
Pascal Leclaire 23 10 56.5%
Evgeni Nabokov 30 14 53.3%
Ty Conklin 15 7 53.3%
Ray Emery 15 7 53.3%
Ryan Miller 21 10 52.4%
Chris Osgood 16 8 50.0%
Martin Biron 15 10 33.3%

yeah boyee! Hoagie’s Corner’s my shizzle.

  3. jon b says:

I didn’t write i. I pasted it fom http://www.hfbords.com. but I was thinking along the same lines. Pretty disturbing stats don’t you think?

  4. Jon B says:

shootouts are supposed to be more difficult for the shooter than the goalie. Biron at 5 saves in 15 attempts is beyond pathetic. Flyers should seriously play three forwards during overtime because shootouts are a 90% loss. shootouts are also kind of gay. I say 10 minute overtime and no point for overtime loss!

  5. Dr. Bumba says:

4 on 4 for 5 minutes, followed by 3 on 3 for 5 minutes and I agree, no point for an overtime loss.

  6. Thirsty Goalie says:

3 points for a win, 2 points for an overtime win and 1 point for an overtime loss so that the points awarded in every game is the same. It’s stupid watching Pittsburgh play New York and just hoping that it doesn’t go to overtime so that they don’t both get points.

  7. bobblehead joe says:

what’s wrong with ties? i’d rather both teams get a point than one team win in rollerhockey rules and a skills competition. that being said, they’re never going to get rid of the shootout because it’s probably the only part of a game that non-hockey fans watch (it’s all about ratings). so i’ll have to go with the three point game (or half point ot/so loss)

  8. RR says:

“F” all of that, make them play sudden death overtime until it ends. Ties and shootouts suck, I want pain and misery.

  9. RR says:

… and great to see you back in action Mr. Hoagie.
    THEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
