Jeff Carter beat Flyers teammate Antero Niittymaki for two shorthanded goals, leading Canada past Finland, 4-2, and into first place in Group E at hockey’s world championships yesterday in Riga, Latvia.
Niittymaki left the ice for good midway through second period because of an apparent groin pull. He had the top save percentage in the tournament entering the game.

Forsberg has first ankle operation

Philadelphia Flyers center Peter Forsberg underwent a three-hour operation on his right ankle Monday to have torn ligaments repaired and several bones realigned.
