San Jose teammates Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo shared the NHL’s offensive player of the week award Monday while Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff earned the defensive honour.
Thornton recorded one goal and 11 assists in four Sharks victories last week while Cheechoo collected seven goals and four assists.
Kiprusoff posted a 2-0-1 record, a 0.32 goals-against average and a .988 save percentage with two shutouts last week.
Robert Esche will be the starting goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers with first place at stake on Tuesday night.
Does that mean Esche will start Game 1 of the playoffs later this week?
“I’ll let you know after tomorrow,” coach Ken Hitchcock said Monday.
So much for defusing a goaltender controversy.
Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk hopes to be on the ice when the playoffs start this weekend, despite not playing since injuring his left thigh two weeks ago.
