For NHL, next 24 will see more action than Jack Bauer

Tick-tick-tick-tick. Or better still, how about the intro and exit clock sounder from “24”? That’s more irritating — the perfect fit for the trade deadline.
Rumors are flying; bodies are not — yet. Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline means transactions will be piling up in the final 24 hours.

Most Likely to be Dealt

Brendan Witt, Mika Noronen, Dwayne Roloson, Curtis Joseph, Eric Weinrich, Mark Recchi

Flyers exploring options as trade deadline nears

At the core of their discussion was how the Flyers should spend the estimated $2.3 million they have available under the NHL’s $39 million salary cap. Should they make a move to bring back Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Mark Recchi for a third time?
Should they restart talks with the Phoenix Coyotes in an attempt to acquire defensemen Derek Morris or Denis Gauthier?
Or, if Morris or Gauthier is not the answer, should they make a pitch for future Boston Bruins Hall of Fame defenseman Brian Leetch?

Worry filling locker room as trading deadline looms

Angst filled the Coyotes dressing room Tuesday a few hours before Phoenix played its final game before the NHL trade deadline of 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Many of the rumors, Barnett said, are ridiculous. He cited those involving captain Shane Doan.
“Shane Doan is a person that I haven’t had a single, solitary discussion about with another team,” Barnett said. “If I did, it would be a short discussion.”
In other words, Doan isn’t going anywhere.
“The primary focus . . . is on players whose contracts are expiring,” Barnett said. “In most of those cases, we would prefer to re-sign the player, but only if the salary fits into our intended structure moving forward.”
Goalie Curtis Joseph, forwards Geoff Sanderson, Steven Reinprecht and Boyd Devereaux, and defensemen Derek Morris and Denis Gauthier are impending unrestricted free agents.
