Esche Number Three

Esche: U.S. coach names Grahame to start in goal

The move was surprising, since many said the Tampa Bay goalie didn’t rate a spot. But he has been hot.
With the Olympic hockey tournament to begin tomorrow, U.S. head coach Peter Laviolette will name Grahame as his surprise starter over the New York Islanders’ Rick DiPietro and the Flyers’ Robert Esche, according to Esche.
Why Grahame? Because the 30-year-old netminder has had three shutouts in his last six starts. Such things can move a guy up the ladder quickly, especially at the Olympics, where a hot goalie can make a critical difference in winning a medal in a short tournament.
