Russia beats Czechs to earn bye to semis

Evgeni Malkin scored his fourth goal of the tournament and set up two others as Russia claimed top spot in Group B standings with a 7-2 victory over the Czech Republic in 2006 world junior hockey championship round-robin play Saturday night.
With the win, Russia (4-0-0) gets a bye into the semifinals. The Czech Republic (2-2-0) finishes third in Group B and will face the second-place team in Group A in quarter-final action on Monday.

Downie ‘good to go’

Elbow won’t keep Canuck out of action. Brent Sutter had a short but revealing answer yesterday when he was asked about the status of Flyers draft pick Steve Downie for a world junior semi-final tomorrow night. “He’s fine,”Sutter said. “He’s Steve Downie.”
